I am 18 looking into getting a breast augmentation. Are there any tips that can help me decide if breast augmentation is right for me? I have thought about it for years and now finally I am researching information about it. My main concern is how it will affect my body and my health.

Hi. Breast implant placement can be done with saline or silicone gel filled implants, placed underneath your pectoralis muscle in an outpatient surgery that carries a short recovery. When you have your consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon, they will evaluate your current health, your desired size and appearance, exam your chestwall & breast/soft tissue and guide you towards the style and size implant that will comfortably fit without increased risks for long term problems. A lot of information regarding previously made silicone gel implants and claims of them causing health issues has lower pertinence as those implants are no longer utilized in the US, and many modifications have increased the safety profile. Please have an in person consultation for more specific information.

Is there a way to tell how long a silicone breast implant has been leaking or ruptured?

Hi. Not simply by examination or even imaging. If you had a traumatic event, it may help guide the estimate. An implant that has ruptured, but the capsule (normal scar tissue surrounding the implant) is intact, will not permit any egress and contact with breast tissue. On MRI, it is usually possible to detect changes consistent with intra or extra capsule material and the integrity of the implant. It is recommended that you have an in person consultation for immediate removal of a failed implant. Please choose a board certified Plastic Surgeon. Best wishes, Dr. Doolabh

Hi. A board certified, experienced Plastic Surgeon will be just as concerned about this and will select an appropriately sized and shaped implant to avoid this. At the time of surgery, the potential for impingement on nerve branches will be minimized by careful placement. Liposuction will also be completed with the same meticulous attention. A sterile operating room, use of antibiotics (intravenous or by mouth, rinsing/ irrigation of the wound, and bathing the implant prior to placement) are all standard procedures to minimize the risks of infection. Adherence to postoperative recommendations on positioning, incision care, etc. is your commitment and part to ensuring the least adverse outcome. Best wishes, Dr. Doolabh

I had a breast augmentation about eight years ago. In the past few years, I have gained about 42 pounds. I am in the process of losing it. However, one breast now seems larger than the other one. My question is, will they both even out after I have lost all the weight I have gained?

Hi, unfortunately there is no guarantee that your breasts will evenly lose the excess that occurred with weight gain. Our breasts are a combination of the skin envelope (that stretches and recoils differently), fatty tissue (difficult to target fat loss), and breast tissue (atrophies unpredictably), which contributes to the differences throughout life. When your weight is stable, have a consultation with an ABPS certified PS and they will guide you whether you would benefit from a lift, reduction, an implant, etc. depending upon your goals.
