While doing a tummy tuck, can an umbilical hernia be repaired at the same time for men? I have had a really bad back problem for the last month. Using morphine to control pain. Have had an MRI and waiting for results.

In general, a small umbilical hernia can be repaired during your tummy tuck. Your question presents a great issue. You have several things going on right now. Your situation is best coordinated by a knowledgeable primary care doctor. They can see that you get an appropriate evaluation for back pain and possibly the hernia (depending on its size and symptoms). They can refer you to an experienced plastic surgeon for examination and consultation. Afterward you and your doctors can plan a course of care to best help you. Best Wishes.

I am a male who has lost lots of weight but now is in very good physical condition. My only problem is loose skin hanging below the belly button. After doing a lot of research, could I just do a mini tummy tuck with no muscle repair? How long would the recovery be? When will I be able to get back to…

I can give you general information about patients having mini or limited tummy tucks, without muscle repair in our practice. Use this information to talk with your chosen plastic surgeon during consultation. When no muscle tightening is necessary we advise patients with office type jobs that they should return to work in about one week. They should delay exercise or vigorous activities for three weeks. They should delay contact sports and adventure activities for two months. All his presumes that there are no postop issues which might individually delay their recovery. Full recovery of most surgery can take one year. Discuss this with your surgeon and Best Wishes.

I have 325cc implants for five years and now I would like to remove them. In order to have a breast lift performed at the same time, is there a new technique or procedure replacing the cuts around the nipple, and reverse T on the breast?

Plastic surgeons goals always include minimal visible scars. Your plastic surgeon will need to evaluate you in person to recommend how to handle your specific situation. Generally, if elevation of the nipple and areola is something you desire, there will be a small scar circling the areola and below it (where the nipple and areola used to be). If there is loose skin in the lower breast (drooping, overlap) then there are alternatives as to how to place the scar to reduce this loose skin. New techniques are regularly being introduced; some become standard and some fade away or are limited to specific situations. During your consultation, your surgeon can best answer your questions. Best Wishes.

Can a mini facelift be done under local anesthesia?

The short answer is "yes." In my practice, full facelift (cheek, jowls, and neck) is regularly performed under general anesthesia. Our mini facelift is designed to correct sagging in the cheek and jowl, and is commonly done under local anesthesia, usually with supplemental oral medications. Our patients are offered the choice of anesthesia and oral medications. The consultation with your chosen surgeon is the time to discuss your concerns and desires, to have him or her evaluate your anatomy and suggest the most effective way to accomplish your goals. When a mini facelift is best, local anesthesia can be an excellent choice. Best Wishes.
