About Robert Singer, MD, FACS

Introduction
Your plastic surgeon should be a rare combination of both artist and scientist. I would expect my surgeon to have the highest credentials and level of training possible, be thoroughly experienced in performing my surgical procedure and be concerned about my care and safety. In addition, he should have a keen aesthetic and artistic sense of harmony. He should be compulsive about every detail in his surgical practice including maintaining privacy and confidentiality.

I have built my practice on this philosophy and these qualifications, and I value the patient relationships that have developed as a result.

While my qualifications and experience as a surgeon are extensive and internationally respected, cosmetic plastic surgery requires far more than technical skills. The time I spend with you personally before any procedure will be as important as the procedure itself. Thoroughly covering your questions, your expectations, your individual desires and wishes...all of this and more will be addressed with sensitivity and understanding.

I treat my patients the way I would expect to be treated...with respect, candor, professionalism and compassion.

Choosing a surgical procedure and the right doctor to perform it are personal decisions not to be taken lightly. You as the patient and I as the doctor must weigh not only the physical considerations, but emotional and psychological ones as well. Improving your appearance through cosmetic surgery can enhance your emotional health and improve your self-esteem. This can be attained only if your expectations are realistic. By your understanding the limitations of plastic surgery, together we will establish reasonable goals that can be predictably achieved.

I am fully dedicated to the highest aesthetic achievement in improving my patients characteristics subtly to achieve a natural appearance rather than an extreme, artificial or operated look.

What defines a great plastic surgeon? An eye for balance and symmetry. Extensive training. Perfectionism. An appreciation of beauty and harmony. A delicate and artistic touch. There are thousands of cosmetic surgeons; however, few are as respected by plastic surgeons around the world for their expertise and artistry as Dr. Robert Singer. When you consult with Dr. Robert Singer in the luxurious and comforting atmosphere of his plastic surgery center in the La Jolla area of San Diego, you will be pleasantly surprised by the personal attention you will receive. Dr. Singer will respectfully and compassionately listen to your desires and expectations, whether they involve subtly changing or significantly improving your appearance. He will give you his candid, professional opinion and work with you to create a final result that appears natural, refreshed, and rejuvenated.

Some women, who never had breast surgery, are naturally unable to breastfeed, and some variations of breast augmentation may make it more likely that you are unable to breastfeed, but most women with breast augmentations are able to successfully breastfeed. Breast implants pose no medical risk to your baby. Robert Singer, MD FACS La Jolla, California
Asked 2014-06-03

I had subpectoral silicone implants placed in 1990. I was able to nurse twins for five months in 1999. I've recently heard that implants should be changed after 15 years. Is this true? I'm still happy with mine and do not notice any obvious problems. My mammograms and ultrasounds have been negative…

There is a myth that implants will last only 10 years. There is no valid scientific data to support that statement. You should realize that no one can guarantee the life cycle of an implant, that it may not last forever and it may not be a one-time surgery. Implants do not need to be replaced unless a problem occurs. There is no expiration date on breast implants. I have personally seen some patients who have had implants in for over thirty years and the implants are still intact. The newer generation of current implants has been improved. The implant manufacturers do have limited warranties on the implants. Robert Singer, MD FACS La Jolla, California

What is the difference between breast augmentation and breast implants?

A breast augmentation is the surgical procedure to enlarge the breasts using an an implant or fat. Breast implants are medical devices that that may be used for cosmetic enhancement (augmentation) or for reconstruction. Find a plastic surgeon that you are comfortable with and one that you trust and listen to his or her advice. The surgeon should be certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and ideally a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). You should discuss your concerns with that surgeon in person. Robert Singer, MD FACS La Jolla, California

I have saline implants under the muscle. No problems. It's been 14.5 years. Should I consider replacing them? Is it better to replace before a rupture?
