About Ethan E. Larson, MD

With his offices in Tucson and Phoenix, Dr. Larson has become a trusted resource for excellence in plastic and cosmetic surgery and compassionate patient care throughout Arizona. He keeps up with new technology to reduce recovery time, diminish scarring, and provide individualized, natural results. Dr. Larson is committed to advancing the science and art of plastic surgery. Dr. Larson is also the former Chief of Plastic Surgery and Microsurgery at the University of Arizona. He works as an assistant clinical professor with dual faculty appointments in surgery and orthopedics and continues to teach and mentor medical students and surgical residents. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers and book chapters covering topics from ethical surgery to breast reconstruction and the surgical treatment of Lipedema.
As one of the top breast surgeons in Arizona, Dr. Larson’s background involves extensive training with the country’s most experienced and respected breast surgeons. Dr. Larson specializes in DIEP flaps for breast reconstruction. In addition to breast augmentations, Dr. Larson performs many other cosmetic procedures, including mommy makeovers, high-definition liposuction, Brazilian Butt lift, tummy tuck, and laser wrinkle removal.
Dr. Larson is nationally recognized for his work with the transgender community, with patients who travel across the country or around the world seeking his experienced management. Dr. Larson specializes in gender affirmation surgery of the breast, including female-to-male and male-to-female reassignment surgery, and is one of the very few doctors with the skill to offer non-binary top surgery. He performs over 100 cases per year with a low complication rate and the most satisfactory surgical outcomes possible in chest appearance and treatment of the underlying gender dysphoria. He also works with the University of Arizona on research to optimize these patients’ long-term outcomes and mental health.

Dr. Larson has drafted the US consensus statement on the treatment of this disease. He is actively researching methods to optimize patient outcomes while minimizing surgical exposure. He is one of fewer than five Board Certified Plastic Surgeons nationally specializing in treating lipedema with outstanding outcomes. He is committed to achieving results in the fewest number of procedures. He has helped to establish the guidelines for the surgical care and management of lipedema in the United States and continues to work on optimizing patient outcomes and recovery from this illness.

Education & Training
Dr. Larson has a distinguished academic background. He graduated summa cum laude with undergraduate degrees in both psychology and microbiology from the University of Arizona, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Larson graduated with the highest academic distinction and was the Outstanding Senior of the year in the College of Microbiological Science.
He served as a distinguished NASA Space Grant research fellow in genetics. He was a Dean’s scholar at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where he was selected as the Outstanding Student in Surgery, and where he graduated with honors at the top of his class in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. Throughout his time at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, he volunteered his time and talents in clinics devoted to underserved communities, and Dr. Larson received the Arnold P. Gould award for humanitarianism in medicine.
After completing his undergraduate degrees and medical school at the University of Arizona, Dr. Larson completed his internship and residency at a premier plastic surgery program, Georgetown University in Washington, DC, with Dr. Scott Spear and Dr. Maurice Nahabedian, both renowned cosmetic and breast reconstruction surgeons. Dr. Larson went on to train under Dr. Peter Neligan, a world-famous microsurgeon at the University of Washington in Seattle, before returning to Arizona to take a job training surgical residents and caring for patients as an assistant professor of plastic surgery and microsurgery at the University of Arizona. He was ultimately named Chief of Plastic Surgery before leaving to establish a patient-centered private practice.
Dr. Larson continues to contribute to research and education. His outcomes paper on lipedema was selected as the paper of the year for PRSGo Journal, and he is one of the authors of the United States standard of care for lipedema.
