Keeping drains in, is this a bad sign?
Asked 2014-09-17
I just had breast augmentation 6 days ago, areolar incision, silicone implants, sub-muscular from a 34A to a 34C. My doctor used drains, so each time we drained, the amount lessened. On day 5, I was supposed to get them out, but they were still draining about 15-200cc 3 x a day combined, so the doctor left the drains in. He said give it one one day. They're still draining, this can't be normal, has anyone ever seen this before?

If your surgeon decided to place a drain into a breast after breast augmentation I'm quite sure there was a very good reason. Reasons to place a drain in an otherwise uncomplicated breast augmentation are excess bleeding, or concern about a seroma when acellularmatrix is placed foror other reasons.
Once breast drains have been placed in a breast augmentation patient it is usual that the drains are not removed until the drainage is approximately 15 cc or less in any one 24-hour period The fact that you are still draining more fluid suggest that the drain is doing a good job and is necessary for your best result. In fact often a great deal of fluid develops in the breast implant cavity and in my opinion draining this fluid should ultimately improve your result.
